ARTLC Sends Letter to State

ARTLC Shares Concerns about Implementation of new African American/Latinx Studies Course with State:

On November 3, the  ARTLC sent a letter outlining concerns about the implementation process for the new statewide African American/Latinx Studies course. Signed by 44 teachers, teacher educators, and youth organizers in Connecticut, the letter was addressed to staff members of the State Education Resource Center, the agency tasked with implementing the legislation that requires every high school to offer a course in African American/Latinx Studies by the 2022-23 school year. The letter was also addressed to the three state lawmakers who sponsored the 2019 legislation to create the course. The letter outlined seven specific concerns about the process taken to develop the course, including limited participation of students and teachers, inadequate funding and resources for teacher training and development, and a fear of displacing existing courses.

SERC staff has responded to the letter and the ARLTC Steering Committee is in the process of setting a meeting to further discuss these concerns.
