Public schools have a long history of sustaining racial inequality and segregation. But they have also provided inspiring models of anti-racism, witnessed in innovative teaching and curricula, collaborations between teachers, students and communities, and commitments to the transformation of our world.
In this webinar, we’ll hear from two experienced panels that will share specific examples of the kinds of anti-racist teaching, learning, and collaboration underway in schools across the state. Our panel of student organizers from the Students for Educational Justice and CT Students for a Dream will describe their efforts to implement holistic educational reform, the practices of anti-racist education proven effective for them, and how they contend with the many challenges and frustrations related to anti-racist organizing. Our second panel consists of a group of public high school teachers with a long history of anti-racist teaching who will share examples of curriculum and pedagogy that they have employed in the classroom, as well as the frameworks and strategies that define an anti-racist educator.
These examples go far beyond the principles of diversity, inclusion, and equity. They instead address histories and contemporary practices of racism and white supremacy, and the social movements and dreams that have arisen in response. Rather than avoiding discussions about race and racism or sidelining them to one week or month of the school year, this work integrates anti-racist curriculum, pedagogy, and practice into the everyday life of the classroom. The webinar will conclude with an extended question and answer session to address questions from the audience and potential next steps.
