THE BLAKE STREET TENANTS UNION

New Haven's rich legacy of determined tenants' union organizing continues to shine brightly through the dedicated efforts of the Connecticut Tenants Union and the Blake Street Tenants Union. In a landmark moment of progress in December 2022, the Blake Street Tenants Union achieved the remarkable milestone of becoming "New Haven's very first officially recognized tenants' union." This remarkable union was born out of necessity, driven by the urgent need for action when their landlord failed to address serious concerns like rodent infestations, disruptive construction, safety hazards, coupled with the ever-present burden of skyrocketing rents.

The management responded with threats of eviction against the brave organizers of the Blake Street Tenants Union. Undaunted and undeterred, the union turned to the broader New Haven community for support. In a display of unwavering unity, hundreds of supporters marched from City Hall to management headquarters, sending a powerful message of solidarity and resilience. Through their collective action and the efforts of the community, the Blake Street Tenants Union emerged triumphant. Their story is a testament to the enduring spirit of people coming together to protect their rights and create lasting change.
