HANNAH GRAY HOME
Amidst a society which disregards and neglects elderly community members, New Haveners have been building networks to care for and nourish one another, even after the city deems them disposable. The Hannah Gray Home on Dixwell Ave “is a residental care home that seeks to provide low income housing, supervised care, and supportive services to elderly individuals in the Dixwell and Greater New Haven communities.” Hannah Gray, an African American seamstress who “earned money as a domestic worker, and donated money to her church and to the abolitionist movement,” wanted her “home to be used for low-income women of color” after she passed away. So, beginning in 1861 following the passing of Ms. Gray, the Hannah Gray home has been “foster[ing] an environment in which residents not only feel a sense of belonging but also feel connected to the cultural and spiritual roots of their community.”
