ACCESS TO CARE FOR UNDOCUMENTED PEOPLE

Undocumented people may validly fear accessing assistance programs (including health coverage) due to the threat of detention/deportation if their immigration status is exposed. In 2021, protestors staged a “die-in” on the steps of New Haven’s City Hall to demand that HUSKY Health Insurance also cover undocumented immigrants.

HUSKY Care did expand to include undocumented children under 12 and then (later in 2023) to under 15; however, its services continue to neglect older undocumented people and those from houses even slightly above the poverty line. People should not fear punishment for seeking care.
