THE HILL PARENTS ASSOCIATION

In 1965, a group of parents of students at the Prince Street School joined together to address the abysmal conditions of their school: “the lack of a library or a full time nurse,” “filthy floors,” “no toilet paper,” and “an incompetent, often drunk white principal.” After successfully picketing the school, the group formally became the Hill Parents Association (HPA), which then absorbed the organizing work and office of the Hill Neighborhood Union. The HPA helped run the Freedom Schools, supported the organizing of young children demanding access to better playgrounds and parks, and more.
