Nataliya Braginsky of New Haven Public Schools Named 2021 State History Teacher of the Year
ARLTC’s own, Nataliya Braginsky, has been named the 2021 State History Teacher of the Year, an award presented by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History for outstanding work and dedication to history education. Braginsky says, “This honor belongs not only to me but also to my brilliant students who have been my collaborators in developing the African American and Latinx history course over the past two years.”
Braginsky has been instrumental in the development of ARTLC’s Communities of Practice, teacher-led groups working together in preparation for teaching the African American and Latinx History course in Connecticut public schools. In addition, Braginsky and her students have created a People’s History Map and Walking Tour of New Haven, which focuses on local Black, Indigenous, and Latinx history in New Haven. She affirms that “We cannot and should not do this work in isolation. We must work with our students to co-create our curriculum and pedagogical practices. We must also connect with fellow educations to learn from and teach one another, and to grow our movement for anti-racism and liberation.”
